DESCRIPTION:At the Shea Theater\, Dr. Marge Bruchac discusses research on Native medicinal plants and practitioners\, the approaches she uses to make these histories visible\, as part of our Food\, Farms\, and Factories project\, in collaboration with the Nolumbeka Project. In 19th century New England\, “Indian Doctors” and “Indian Doctresses” treated Native and non-Native neighbors alike. Connecticut River valley residents turned to Mohican and Abenaki practitioners for what we recognize today as herbalism\, chiropractic\, physiotherapy\, and spiritual healing. As people moved increasingly towards modern medicine\, these gifted healers were forgotten\, and their knowledge exploited by patent medicine makers. Workers organized with a democratic trade union that was targeted in a national political campaign aimed against it. This led to a peaceful confrontation in Greenfield and surrounding towns that surprised onlookers near and far. Join ornithologist Zeke Jakub of Conservación Panamá for one or more FREE hour-long birdwatching adventures. These walks introduce you to these fabulous migratory birds along the Connecticut River. Learn about conservation research and actions\, and what you can do. For ages 14 and up. Bring binoculars and a bird field guide if you have them\, dress for the weather\, and wear sturdy shoes. Workers organized with a democratic trade union that was targeted in a national political campaign aimed against it. This led to a peaceful confrontation in Greenfield and surrounding towns that surprised onlookers near and far.
