DESCRIPTION:Join us for two back-to-back documentaries\, brought back to life by the Montague Historical Society\, about local machine companies. Join Ed Gregory and Chris Clawson from the Montague Historical Society\, and Dawn Ward from our Friends Group for Q & A. For teens and adults. Hot chocolate included! Meet in the Great Hall. \nThe Mill at Montague \nAn oral history time capsule from 1991 of the Martin Machine Company\, once in operation in the location now known as the Montague Bookmill. (29 minutes) \nFactory Tour of Millers Falls Tools \nSeveral generations of the Shortell family\, of Greenfield MA\, were involved with the famous Millers Falls Tool Company\, which once had manufacturing facilities in both Greenfield and Erving (at the border with Millers Falls). Ed Shortell was the last manager of production before the company’s absorption by the Ingersol-Rand company in the 1970s. The footage is from 1943 and includes recent narration from Rich Shortell and Ed Gregory. It is a unique and amazing war time tour of the factory at Millers Falls (Ervingside). Watch how production from another era at war got the job done! (14 minutes)

SUMMARY:DINO TRAIL WEEK TALK: Climate Cycles and Volcanic Singularities During the Dawn of the Age of Dinosaurs
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a dynamic presentation on climate\, volcanos\, and dinosaurs by Dr. Paul Olsen. The ancient Connecticut Valley rift basin is filled with spectacular\, fossil-bearing alternations of deep and shallow water lake sediments that provide a timeline for the beginning of dinosaur dominance 200 million years ago. A huge volcanic event then set off a cold-hot climate whiplash\, killing off some dinosaurs while others survived and spread globally. The record of the ecological consequences is now exposed along the Connecticut River\, especially at the Great Falls. \nDr. Olsen is Storke Professor of Earth & Environmental Sciences at Columbia University/Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory. One of the most prominent paleontologists on dinosaurs\, he has studied the geology and paleontology of our region in depth. Don’t let his credentials scare you! In Bob’s single author anthology Compositions on Compassion and Other Emotions\, he explores the importance of love and hope in healing from the pandemic and endemic violence. Proceeds from this work fund the National Alliance to End Homelessness. \nSteve Koziol\, best known for playing in the bands Dingo Roi and Span of Sunshine\, is a songwriter and musician\, who has contributed guitar\, keyboard\, bass\, alto sax\, and vocal harmonies to many bands and performers throughout Hampshire and Franklin Counties.  From youth to adults\, all are welcome at this event\, sponsored by the Friends of the Great Falls Discovery Center and RiverCulture.
